Need to stop IPAM from releasing IP address automatically when a host goes inactive/down

$

We are trying to use IPAM to manage our IP address.  But we are having a huge problem.  We are handing out static ip addresses and
putting a lot of information about that ip address like the owner and what the
ip address is being use for.  When we
first put the information in it is set up as reserved and it holds the
information fine that way until the ip address goes active.

Once the IP address goes active in the Solar Winds IPAM
program and if for whatever reason the owner of the static ip address turns their
host off for an X amount time, this IPAM program will set the IP address to available
AND DELETE all of the information about the ip address.  This is a huge problem for us.  Because we use this program to hand out ip
address out to folks.  And when this program
deletes all of the information and makes this IP Address available again  we give out a duplicate ip address to someone
else AND all of our information is lost.

My question is how do you stop IPAM from automatically
making an ip address available and deleting ALL of the information about that
IP address?!

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

IPAM - Alerting

Hello,

We are currently using the SolarWinds IPAM to monitor our network subnets.

We have a dedicated Server team and a network team.

We would like to have alerts/Reports generated and sent via Email with Details, as soon as the Server team uses an IP address from the available pool of IPs on certain subnets.

As soon as the status changes from Available to Used, we get an email alert specifying the " <IP> has changed state to Used as of <Date/Time>".

This would allow us to check with the server team as to what this IP was used for, and be more proactive.

Has anyone figured out a way to do ?

I have played around with Alerts but havent been able to find the correct trigger condition for such an alert, neither have I been able to find out the correct variables to put in the Email message, that shows the IP address that would trigger the condition.

I tried writing an SQL query, but havent figured out the Table names for the Available IP addresses and the Used ones either.

Has any one else faced the same issue and have implemented a solution for the same ?

IPAM Alerts, Reports

HI,

Is there a way to configure an alert that send me a mail everytime a IP change its status?

I've select every possible variable but nothing so far.

i open the report writer application to see what variables is using IPAM to write the logs on the Last XX IPAM events box and i've noticed that there are three groups from were you can select a variable (IPAM Networks, IPAM Nodes, Events) but in the advance alert manager there is only one group (IPAM Networks).

thanks

Reinstall IPAM to recover information still in Database

Hello Community,

We recently uninstalled IPAM software because we migrated the license to another server but we forgot to export several groups of IP subnets. I noticed that the information is in the database. If we install IPAM software again, can i see this information on the software again?

Best practices for configuring IPAM with DHCP failover, either hot standby or load balanced?

$

We are a hospital that has two DHCP environments, one for mobile devices (staff, patients, and families) and one for everything else.  The mobile environment is two DHCP servers in a 50-50 load balance partnership while the other environment is a hot standby partnership with the primary server at our main data center and the partner at our DR data center.  I have been looking for best practice documentation for configuring IPAM to manage these environments but I cannot seem to find any, if they exist.

IPAM not showing Hostname

Hi,

We have several modules NPM, NCM, SAM and others and just added IPAM.  But when I do my subnet scans, it shows me what is available and what is used, and on the appropriate items shows me System Name, but it does not show me Hostname.  Is there a reason that it does not do a reverse lookup on the IP using the server's DNS address to fill in that information.  I know that reverse DNS lookups are working from the server, because when I do a discovery, I do it by IP address and it always comes back with the hostname.  I thought that SNMP would work, but what about Windows Server devices? I must be missing something.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hostnames not showing up in IPAM - What is the problem?

$

I have seen several posts about this issue but no real answer.  I have the DNS servers identified in IPAM and I have reverse lookup zones for all my networks, but when I scan the subnets in IPAM the hostname does not populate for a lot of the "Used" IP's.

When I click on the item to edit it, however, the name clearly shows up in the  "DNS Record" section.  Why oh why if it knows the DNS name does it not populate that in the hostname?

Furthermore, I read somewhere else that if ping -a doesn't resolve a particular hostname then IPAM will not.  I tried this on a particular entry and although IPAM knows the DNS name (listed in the DNS record section), a ping -a does not return the hostname, only the IP.

So, can someone explain how to fix this issue so that whatever funky way solarwinds uses to populate the hostname will work?  Is it some setting I need to change on my DNS server?  Or is there another way I can force IPAM to use the dns record to populate the hostname?

Import subnets spreadsheet does not add the IP addresses

Hi,

I understand that when importing a spreadsheet of multiple subnets, the IP addresses are not populated; but, I don't understand why when manually scanning the imported subnets, the IPs are not discovered.

I don's see a situation where somebody wants to have all the subnets in IPAM, but not the IPs within the subnets.

Transient IPs?

Whats the deal with transient IPs?

I have daily scanning of several subents enabled.  Sometimes, IPAM will populate the list fairly accurately (we may some some devices with ICMP and SNMP disabled).

But other times, the scan will come back and list every IP as transient.

A google search of "transient IPs" gives thousands of varied results.

So what gives?  There have been no changes on these networks, but at scan at 10am will poplutae accuratly, and one a 3pm will result in 100% transient, and my scope utilization drops to 0%

IP Address Query

Im looking to query a next available IP address in a range.

I have gotten this far  Get-SwisData $swis 'SELECT TOP 1 I.IpAddress FROM IPAM.IPNode I WHERE Where IpAddress >30 AND Status=2 AND I.Subnet.DisplayName = ''10.8.63.0/24'''

But I need the first available between a range like between 10.8.63.30 - 10.8.63.230

Havent been able to figure this out. I tried to filter results but all of their methods are string values and Im not sure how to filter those.  Additionally if you change the 'SELECT TOP' value from 1 to say
5 or 10 or 20, its duplicates the values it returns, which im not sure why it does that.  There must be another 'WHERE' clause I use to filter the results on the initial query.

Any ideas?

DNS Records Mismatch Report

I'd like to build a report that mimics the DNS Records Mismatch resource in the IPAM summary.  Not really sure where to start with this (working on our first Orion box)...  I assume it's possible via the report writer or such?

Is there an analysis component to this also, or is the data in the mismatch resource stored somewhere in the DB as-is (and not generated on the fly)?

Thanks for any pointers!

IPAM Scan job Status question

$

In IPAM in the scan job status in IPAM settings, the status is "queued" and never changes. Scan trigger is automated. Last discovery shows the date probably when it was first set up.

When you chose a subnet and click on the Scan feature, it doesnt scan, it appears as if it just Qued up the scan job but wont ever run. Looks like there is multiple jobs in there as well.

Is that normal? Is that because they were queued up run automatically and never ran? How do you kick them off and/or remove them if needed?

SQL queries to automate the reservation of IPs (vRealize Automation)

$

Hello everyone,

We are currently working to automate our VM deployment process using vRealize Automation (VRA). We see that we cannot do this using the Orion SDK, or a VRA Plugin, though both are being worked on.

A contractor developed the SQL queries below, that we would like to use to get IPs. I was hoping for a second set of eyes to review these and verify that we are not missing anything.

I have tested everything with select queries in SQL Studio (not update), and all looks well. One question I have is: do we need to manually update the reserved count and percent used columns, or will they get updated automatically?

--Get first 'Available' IP (starting after 10) based on Address and CIDR:

SELECT Top (1) IPAddress FROM IPAM_Node AS a INNER JOIN IPAM_Group as b ON a.SubnetId=b.GroupId WHERE b.Address = 'xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx' AND b.CIDR = 'xx' AND a.Status=2 AND IPOrdinal > 10

--Update the IP Status to 'Used':

UPDATE IPAM_Node SET Status=4, StatusBy=9, Comments='Automated allocation from vRealize', LastSync=NULL WHERE IPAddress='xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx'

--Update reserved count after allocation:

UPDATE IPAM_Group SET ReservedCount = ReservedCount + 1 WHERE Address = 'xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx' AND CIDR = 'xx' AND GroupId IN (SELECT SubnetID From IPAM_Node)

--Update percent used:

DECLARE @PercentUsed decimal(19,5)

    SET @PercentUsed =

(SELECT cast(cast(a.used as float) / cast(a.AvailableCount as float) as decimal(19,5))

FROM (SELECT UsedCount + ReservedCount AS used, AvailableCount

             FROM IPAM_Group

WHERE Address = 'xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx' AND CIDR = 'xx' AND GroupId IN (SELECT SubnetID From IPAM_Node))

   a)

UPDATE IPAM_Group SET PercentUsed=@PercentUsed WHERE Address = 'xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx' AND CIDR = 'xx' AND GroupId IN (SELECT SubnetID From IPAM_Node)

Thanks,

Tanner

[python] update() on subnet fails

Hi,

I'm trying to update the 'Comments' property on one of my subnets:

code looks like this:

comments = 'MY-TEST-COMMENT'

swis.update(uri, Comments=comments)

IPAM discovering duplicates

$

I have just installed the latest version of IPAM.  I added my two DHCP servers and it discovered all the scopes just fine.  The only problem is that under the 'manage subnet' tab there are several duplicate subnets.  How can I ensure that this does not happen?

What We're Working on for Orion IPAM

Here are the latest features and goodness we're working on for Orion IPAM.

  • Cisco DHCP Support - we've got Microsoft DHCP, but we've had many requests for being able to pull leases from Cisco DHCP servers as well.
  • Indirect Discovery - this is another IP status discovery method that will give us an accurate status even if ICMP and SNMP are blocked or disabled.
  • Search Improvements - you asked for it, so we're giving you the ability to search on any field.

What do you think?

-Craig

PLEASE NOTE:  We are working on these items based on this priority order, but this is NOT a commitment that all of these enhancements will make the next release.  We are working on a number of other smaller features in parallel.   If you have comments or questions on any of these items (e.g. how would it work?) or would like to be included in a preview demo, please let us know!

IPAM Export and Import (migration to new server)

$

I am interested in rebuilding our entire SolarWinds Orion suite on a new set of servers. Our environment has changed radically, so we are going to start over with devices, configuration, etc.  The only data I want to carry over to the new platform is the IPAM database.

What would be the best suggestion for doing this?  Is there an easy way to export all the IPAM data from the old system and bring it in to the new system?

IPAM Scheduled scan

I would like to have control on the IPAM scan schedule.  Is there any way to tell IPAM when to start the scanning.  I've already change the scan frenquency to 24 hours instead of the default 4 hours but now I wish to start the scan when the network in not to busy.

Is there any way to do this?

IPAM not resolving hostnames

$

I can't figure this out.  I have IPAM 4.0.0 installed and it is scanning quite a few different domains.  It seems that the domain that the Solarwinds server is located all the IP addresses resolve to hostnames.  Every other domain this is not the case.  If I do an NSLOOKUP on the server, the IP addresses do resolve and I have a DNS server defined in Solarwinds.  Any clues on what I have not configured?

What's the expected behavior when a DHCP scope is deleted from the server?

All,

Our DHCP admin deleted 4 scopes yesterday but the scopes and subnets still appear in IPAM.  Should deleted scopes be removed when IPAM syncs the DHCP servers or is it a manual process of deleting the scopes and subnets?

Thanks,
Kevin
