How to properly delete a "DNS Zone"

$

0

I (now) manage IPAM but I did not set any of it up so my knowledge of how it works is minimal. I read read docs and couldn't find specifically what I wanted to know so...

Details: (We have IPAM 4.1)

We have several DNS Zones in IPAM that have an "Unreachable" status (because a domain has been removed), as well as some other zones that are not appearing to update  (old "Last Zone Transfer" times, or "Dynamic Update" is set to "No Update").  These zones mostly have "Zone Type" set to Primary (some have Secondary) and the "Lookup Type" is either Forward or Reverse.

In the IPAM Summary page we have *many* red and yellow events about zone transfers being cancelled or "not responding".

Questions:

- I feel I can just select the zones that are marked  "Unreachable" or "No Update" and delete them via the "Remove DNS Zones" button, but does this "talk back" or do *anything* to the associated DNS server these zones are attached to (like cause *any* changes on the DNS server side) or does all it do is clean up IPAM?

- I could delete them of the above manually (there aren't 100's of them)  but is hitting "Scan" a better way to initiate a cleanup?  I don't want to set up an entire non-prod Orion and configure IPAM just to play around.

Thanks in advance!

How to use IPAM / NPM with "unmanaged IP addresses"

$

Recently installed both and I just realized that most of my server (static addresses) are not in IPAM or NPM. Just to document how I got on this track is: I removed 2 devices from my network and the cable drops are to be removed, they were unmarked. So I thought, I'll just search IPAM to find the device, then locate the switch port using UDT. I can't find the device because the IP address is basically unknown to all of my SW products. Here's how my inherited network is setup. IP range 10.4.20.1/19. My missing IP's are in the exact range of 10.4.28.1-10.4.29.254. For the 10.4.20.1/19 subnet, DHCP is configured to handle 10.4.20.1-10.4.21.250. Is my problem due to the fact that my subnet is 10.4.20.1/19 but that entire scope is not within the DHCP range? If so, how should I go about fixing this? Should I enable the entire subnet for SHCP and then exclude the 10.4.28.1-10.4.29.250?

What is the best way to merge an IPAM install NPM?

Several years ago stood up an install of IPAM to get our IP management under control.  This past fall we started evaluating NPM along with several other components.  Those are now in production in their own Orion environment with IPAM remaining isolated.  We are wanted to expand IPAM to other groups in our organization and feel it would be super beneficial to merge the environments.  Has anyone done anything like this before and if so is there anything we need to watch out for?

Thanks!

Split existing subnet into smaller subnets without losing data?

Is there a way to split an existing into smaller subnets without losing data/comments? i.e. split a /24 subnet into /27 and /28 subnets while retaining existing comments and reservations.

How does Transient status work with addresses released by a DHCP server?

$

My understanding is that IPAM assigns the Transient status to an IP address that fails to respond during a scan, and it will maintain that designation up to the time period set in the IPAM Settings menu, unless that address shows as in use on a subsequent scan.

Assuming I have that concept correct, what will IPAM do with a Transient address if it is DHCP and has been released by a DHCP server? In other words, say the Transient setting is 7 days in IPAM, but the DHCP server releases that address after 2 days. How will IPAM designate that address on the next scan if it is found to be in use? Will it show it as Transient or as Used?

Mac addresses appearing as FFFFFFFF

Hello!

My name is Mathew, I am a systems administrator at an enterprise company in Australia. In the past year I have been implementing SolarWinds and learning the ropes. Since it's inception however, IPAM has been registering some Mac Addresses on the network as FFFFFFFF. However in DHCP, these addresses have the correct address associated with them.

IPAM issue.PNG

This seems to be limited to certain makes or models of printers. (Samsung printers seem to be a big culprit) UPS devices for instance are showing up with a Mac address of 00000000.

Is there a module I have to load for IPAM to be able to manage Samsung printers? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Question on alert tuning...

For the  IP Manager, under Manage Advanced Alerts. Can you distinguish between laptops/desktops (which we are not concerned with) and if it is a server/other network device that goes down/unresponsive. Not sure which option to set to "yes"  to distinguish the two.    Sorry for the newbie question...

IPAM & Bind not working

I recently installed IPAM 4.2 eval since we are considering purchasing this software at my company.  The first thing I did was try to connect to it my Bind DNS server running on RHEL6.  I gave it the root credentials and made sure root was allowed to log in via SSH.

It scanned the system and pulled the configuration in correctly.  I was impressed.

But everytime I try to add a record, it just hangs at 50% and says "Creating DNS record on server..... Connected and downloaded Configuration file success".

It eventually fails and says "Configuration file was modified outside, please rescan and try again."

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

DHCP Scope name as Display name ?

Is it possible for the DHCP Scope name to be assigned automatically as the Display name on a DHCP Network scope ?

I currently have about 50 DHCP scopes and would prefer not having to manually go through them to alter the name before I move them out of Discovered items.

Thank you

Adding DHCP server gives error - There are no more endpoints available from the endpoint mapper

I am trying to evaluate the IPAM module but am not able to add a second DHCP server.  I was able to add one server just fine, but when I add the second it fails right away with "There are no more endpoints available from the endpoint mapper".  I have confirmed RPC on the server and no blocking on port 135 or greater than 1024.  The error says to "see troubleshooting steps", but that page has no mention of this type of error.

automatically creating group nesting on import?

I'm attempting to export a set of data from another tool where the subnets are grouped into a heirarchy independently of their actual subnet/supernet relationship - for example, I have many (6000+) /26 networks that serve different purposes within multiple sites that are grouped by use and location.

Ideally I'd like to be able to import this set of relationships as-is however while the import tool does seem to allow creation of groups, it doesn't appear to let me specify their relationship to one another - despite the implied grouping data shown in the graphic on the 'Preparing to import a spreadsheet' page ... although the graphic may be from a different version of the product as the fields depicted in these images don't match those in either of the example spreadsheets available from the interface.

I may be missing something however - are there more up-to-date example spreadsheets that I should be using?  I appear to have IPAM 4.3

Missing Edit DHCP option on IPAM after NPM/SAM upgrade

We upgraded recently to Orion NPM v10.7 and SAM 6.1.  The server is hosting several other Orion tools, including IPAM v4.1.  We did not encounter major issues during the upgrade for either NPM or SAM.  However, we noticed last week that the option to Edit DHCP servers is no longer accessible.  Now, we can see and click on the Manage DHCP servers link from the IPAM Settings page.  However, when we click on the link, it takes us to the DHCP & DNS Management page, but there is no Edit DHCP servers menu.  See below:

Missing Edit DHCP server option on IPAM.GIF

We opened a case w/SW and they recommended for repair on the IPAM module as well as the SW Orion Core Services.  I first ran the repair on IPAM (and ran the Config Wizard) but it did not bring the Manage DHCP servers option back.  After this did not work, I then ran the repair on the SW Orion server and re-ran the Config Wizard; again, no luck either.  Has anyone else in this forum run into this (or a similar) issue after upgrading NPM and/or SAM?  Thanks in advance.

Create DHCP scope on Cisco Node

Hi,

The Creating DHCP Scopes section in the admin guide explains how to add DHCP servers.

What I am trying to figure out is whether one can CREATE an DHCP scope on a Cisco node.

Is there a kind soul that can confirm this before i buy 4 unlimited IPAMs for this specific reason?

I would very much like screenshots showing an Cisco node as the selected DHCP server and the Next page showing the configuration of a new DHCP scope to be added.

Thanks in advance.

DHCP Address Management

Someday I will be able to contribute more than ask questions....but until then . I have been researching a possible solution to do 30 to 60 day scans on IP addresses that have not responded in that time. After which I would then make the addresses available. Has a solution such as this been explored or is this a current capability?

Appreciate everyone’s patience and help.

MAC Address?

$

I noticed when you select an IP entry in IPAM and click on View Details there is a field for MAC Assignment History. I've noticed in some it shows a MAC address based on SNMP but on just regular nodes (PCs for example) there is no MAC history. Does anyone know if there's anyway to pull the MAC history other than by SNMP? What I'm wondering about is if there is ARP table lookup mechanism that can match IPs in IPAM with MAC addresses?

Thanks for any suggestion you might have.
